Wednesday evening, officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez died in the line of duty in Tacoma while responding to a domestic violence call. Reports say it was the type of call he’d responded to countless times before, but this time the violence he was confronting could not be assuaged. His last actions were to move others to safety and to charge into the face of danger in an effort to rescue others. His selfless actions bring to mind the scripture, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Officer Gutierrez showed great love for his community, for the broken, and for the hopeless. I’d urge prayer for his family, friends, and brothers and sisters in law enforcement who never know when they will face a day like this day.
